Q: When did you first join R4R and how did you learn about us?
A: I joined Runnin’ for Rhett in July 2010. I was trying to complete a 5k in Elk Grove Park doing the Run 4 Independence in June. I saw a group run past me in blue shirts and upon completing my run, I approached a member (Rachelle Hightower) and asked how I could join.
Q: Describe yourself in 25 words or less.
A: A wife of 35 years, on July 29th, married to Kevin Spease. Our son, Jeremy, is married to Ryley and they have 2-year-old daughter.
Q: You are very involved in Elk Grove’s Run 4 Independence. What does this event mean to you? With many races to choose from on the 4th of July what should our Blue Crew members know about this race to encourage their participation in 2025?
A: I am helping host the July 4th Run 4 Independence because my Rotary Club of Laguna Sunrise believes in helping fight food insecurity. Our club got involved when we heard that the Elk Grove Food Bank, who is also planning their Gala celebrating 50 years of serving our area, needed help putting on the event. New this year is that there are two beneficiaries. The Elk Grove Food Bank and Al-Misbaah will share the proceeds equally. This is a great way for the family and friends to come and walk or run and benefit two worthy organizations. Again, food insecurity has almost tripled in our area over the last 3 years. In addition, the Pride of Laguna Lions are providing pancakes in the vendor area after the race.
Q: What has been your most unusual or interesting job?
A: My most interesting job was when I worked for America Online, in Ogden, Utah, and I was selected to go train new employees in Bangalore, India. I was gone for 65 days. It was a life-changing experience.
Q: Where has been your favorite vacation destination and why?
A: Euro Disney Marne de Valle France. It was my son’s first Disney experience and he was 3 years old.
Q: What’s something most people don’t know about you?
A: Most people don’t know I am adopted.
Q: What has been your proudest moment since being a part of the R4R family?
A: My proudest moment was when I was able to be “Goofy” by completing the 13.1 and 26.1-mile races back to back in Disney World 2023. Having team members cheer me on and checking on me before the run made for awesome run memories knowing that all the members had my back.
Q: If you were a vegetable, what would you be and why?
A: If I were a vegetable I would want to be celery. It’s crunchy and there is a gap to put in peanut butter and raisins for a healthy snack with a drink.
Q: How would you describe your Runnin’ for Rhett experience to a child?
A: I am a member of a group that collects funds so we can teach after-school fitness and prepare students for their first 5k in many schools in the area.
