Q: When did you first join R4R and how did you learn about us?
A: After training for a Couch to 5K; I signed up for the next available race online, “Run Because You Can 5K.” This was in 2011. I ran into an old friend, Sarah Krum (now Sarah Barrow), who was part of the Runnin’ for Rhett Group. She talked me into signing up and running my first ever half-marathon. The rest is history.
Q: Describe yourself in 25 words or less.
A: I’m a husband, father of two, college professor, and business owner who loves to serve the community. I love to eat donuts and running allows me to do so, so I run for donuts. (sorry more than 25 words).
Q: With Veteran’s Day coming up, what would you like to share about being a Marine Corps veteran?
A: In the Marine Corps, I learned the values of honor, courage, and commitment, and being a part of something bigger than myself. These values have stayed with me through all of these years; I strive to have moral and ethical behavior, have the courage to make tough decisions, and be dedicated to the things that I believe in. With Runnin’ for Rhett, I am able to be a part of something bigger than myself as well.
Q: How does running with Runnin’ for Rhett compare with running with the Marines?
A: Running with this group is a lot different than running in the Marine Corps. I enjoy this group a lot more; even though I do push myself, it is fun to run when I have a choice to do so.
Q: Can you share any tips for what you do to get through a difficult workout?
A: Some tips I did learn from when I was in the Marine Corps; breathing techniques, form, and some stretches as well. In boot camp, we learned to breathe out on every fourth (or third step); controlling your breathing can go a long way. Don’t squeeze your fists when running; your arms will get tired, along with everything else. Other tips I learned from our coaches here (cadence, belly breathing, etc.)
Q: What’s something most people don’t know about you?
A: Most people don’t know that I am a dreamer, and I know that all my dreams can be accomplished if I work hard and smart enough. I plan on owning a house in Lake Tahoe, close to the water. I also plan on traveling all over the world (more than I did in the service), to places like Croatia, the Maldives, the pyramids in Egypt, etc.
Q: What has been your proudest moment since being a part of the R4R family?
A: This is a tough one; so many to choose from. I would say that being a pace leader and having my name on my shirt is probably my proudest moment since I’ve joined the R4R family. I really felt the responsibility for my group, and it made me feel good.
Q: How would you describe your Runnin’ for Rhett experience to a child?
A: My Runnin’ for Rhett experience has opened my eyes to how important running and staying active are in my life. I have also learned the value of having a team to guide and support you with your running/walking goals. Having Rhett’s face on my shirt reminds me of how blessed I am to have the ability to run, walk and move into life, when so many others don’t have that luxury.
