Nancy Friday – September 2022

Q: When did you first join R4R and how did you learn about us?

A: I joined R4R 5 years ago, in August of 2017. I saw an ad on Facebook and was enticed because they had training in Elk Grove. I called the number on the ad, came by myself, and have kept showing up ever since. Becky even dropped off the t-shirt at my school!

Q: With your upcoming move, you recently shifted your Saturday workouts from Elk Grove to the greater Sacramento Area. What are you enjoying most about the change and what do you miss most about the Elk Grove workouts?

A: I enjoy all of the fun conversations and running on the bike trail! I miss seeing all my EG buddies and Tina’s fun warm-up vibe to get us started.

Q: What’s your very favorite “Movin’ into Life” activity?

A: I can’t choose one. I think my favorite is that there’s always something happening! I’ve enjoyed adding pickleball, Monday nights are some of my favorite times and I’ve really enjoyed all of our destination races.

Q: With the schools just starting up and your summer break over, what are you most excited about this new school year?

A: I always enjoy getting to know the students I support. They have such unique personalities and complex needs that my year is always interesting. I’m also really excited about my opportunities to provide mentoring for new speech-language pathologists and to present professional development information.

Q: What has been your most unusual or interesting job?

A: I grew up in Rancho Cordova and we had a Smorga Bob’s on Zinfandel. At age 16, I typically worked as a server but on weekends I’d dress up as “Bobby Cat”. I wore a huge Sylvester costume and handed out special treats. It was fun to be animated and silly without people knowing who I was. It was not fun when children cried because they were scared of a huge Sylvester!

Q: What’s something most people don’t know about you?

A: I have a panda collection that I started when I was in high school. In my first apartment, I got a little panda crazy and had panda everything! I’ve toned it down and now I have just my favorite pieces in a special curio cabinet.

Q: What has been your proudest moment since being a part of the R4R family?

A: My proudest moments have definitely been helping new runners complete their first race. It’s empowering to help people recognize the strength they have inside.

Q: If you were a vegetable, what would you be and why?

A: I’d probably want to be a potato. They’re versatile, loved by many, and can be healthy and delicious!

Q: How would you describe your Runnin’ for Rhett experience to a child?

A: When I coach, I tell the students that I belong to the “adult” version of Runnin’ for Rhett. I let them know that I race, play, and have fun just like they do at recess. There’s the phrase “Dance like no one’s watching”. I’d say, “Run like you’re at recess”!
