Sierra is training for her first half marathon with her best human friend Arielle. Come meet this dynamic duo and cheer them on at the goal run on March 13th!
Q: Arielle, how long have you been with Runnin’ for Rhett?
A: I started running with Rhett in 2009-2010. My parents Bill and Denette got me into it. I’ve been training for something ever since, either runs or Tough Mudders or Spartans. I fell out of love with Tough Mudders/Spartans and fell back in love with running last year to cope with 2020.
Q: Tell us a little bit about Sierra.
A: Sierra is 5 years old, going on 6 in April. She’s lived with me since she was a puppy, born in Fresno and moved to Sacramento with me in 2015. She loves running, chasing squirrels, eating, and morning cuddles. She especially loves running in the rain. And her favorite area to run is, of course, the gorgeous American River trail. If she doesn’t get her run or walk, she likes to annoy me by pawing, or howling all around the house until she does. Or stare into my soul with her chilly blue eyes until I give in.
Q: How long have you been running together?
A: Sierra has been running with me consistently since 2018, but since we started training for the 1/2 marathon, we’ve definitely picked up the pace together. She’s my favorite and best running partner. I’m so lucky to have her. She’s a true sled dog and works her tail off! On days when I struggle to get motivated, she’s right there, dancing with excitement to head out the door and onto the trail or through our neighborhood. She’s been the best part of training!
Q: How do you train for a half marathon with your best friend?
A: Sierra’s running pace is faster than me, however, we train at a 2:1 pace. Sierra is an excellent pack leader, motivator, and trail runner. She gets really excited to see her Grand-dog parents, Bill and Denette, if we run together. Her only weakness would be uphill running, which I have no idea why, she just doesn’t do well. She takes frequent water breaks during the long runs and will sometimes cool off her paws in the American River. On the long mile runs, Sierra runs with a pack that holds her water just to make sure she is constantly hydrated. I never run without her.
