Q: When did you first join R4R, and how did you learn about us?
A: I joined Runnin’ for Rhett in 2016. I had been part of the American Heart Association Start Training program since 2011. We would always see this group in baby blue on the parkway. So, when AHA stopped its program, my friends and I decided to give R4R a try so we could keep training.
Q: With Valentine’s Day in February, we tend to think of the month as being associated with love and hearts. How does Moving into Life relate to heart health for you?
A: My fitness journey began with the American Heart Association. Heart health was very important to me because both of my grandmothers had strokes as did my college roommate. Moving into life is about being fit and active. Moving on a consistent basis is great for your cardiovascular system. But, if you work out with a crew, it also helps your heart to connect with others to feel supported and encouraged.
Q: What’s your very favorite “Move into Life” activity?
A: I enjoy a lot of different activities from aerobics to Zumba. I enjoy walking and running. But I also love circuit training, weightlifting, and kickboxing. There are so many ways to move your body. And, if you have done one of my warmups, you know that I love dancing. If you want a great workout, just put on your favorite groove, and get moving!
Q: How do you like to spend your free time? Any hobbies of note?
A: I enjoy community service. Last year, I was appointed to the City of Elk Grove Diversity and Inclusion Commission. And I love serving as an ambassador for equity and acceptance. I’m also an avid reader. I’m a sucker for a good romance novel.
Q: What has been your most unusual or interesting job?
A: My current job managing the City of Sacramento Entertainment Permit Program is very interesting. Working on nightlife issues has been an amazing challenge. I get to work with many different folks. I frequently go out after hours with the Sacramento Police Department Entertainment Team. Downtown Sacramento at midnight is very different than it is at noon!
Q: How would you encourage someone who is new to fitness to give our Adult Fitness Program a try?
A: The most important thing for anyone beginning their fitness journey is to have fun. And being part of the Blue Crew is lots of fun! It’s not about how fast or far you go. Our focus is on helping folks to enjoy the journey and reach their goals.
Q: What has been your proudest moment since being a part of the R4R family?
A: There are so many! But I have been most proud of our Adult Fitness Program committee. It has been amazing to watch how everyone worked so hard to keep everything going during the height of the pandemic. There were so many innovative ideas like the Bay to Blue Stay Fit program. We helped people stay connected and active during challenging and uncertain times. When the world was going crazy, we provided folks with a bit of normalcy.
Q: If you were a vegetable, what would you be and why?
A: If I was a vegetable, I would be Brussel sprouts. I’m an acquired taste and I’m not for everyone.
Q: How would you describe your Runnin’ for Rhett experience to a child?
A: I would say that it’s a fun way to become active. And I would encourage them to use physical activity to deal with stress. These past few years have been tough on kids. Our Youth Fitness Program was a great outlet for them.
